Analyst, Research and Policy Analysis Department

Position Description

We are seeking an Analyst to join our Research and Policy Analysis (RPA) Department – an individual who is interested in opportunities to ensure senior staff and clients have information to impact federal and state policies, and who can work on a range of bipartisan issues. The RPA Department provides fundamental support to FTP’s government relations and public affairs professionals by researching, interpreting, and analyzing federal and state legislation, key developments in the legislative process, public policy proposals, political dynamics of key topics, and media coverage of pertinent issues. The Department also contributes to firm growth by assessing markets and assisting in the development of business relationships. The RPA Department is central to all our work at FTP, from business development to building strategy to legislative and policy analysis at the state and federal levels.

The Analyst reports directly to the Senior Vice President & Head of RPA.

This position is full-time salaried with benefits and paid holidays, based in Washington, D.C. This position describes the general nature of the work to be performed and does not include an exhaustive list of all duties, skills, or abilities required.

 Primary Responsibilities

  • Analyzing legislation and regulations and providing strategic policy and political advice to senior staff and clients at the state and federal levels
  • Drafting public-facing research documents to support ongoing issue advocacy campaigns and meet client needs
  • Assist team in summarizing the events that occurred in Congress and the Administration over the week
  • Assisting in business development and marketplace assessments to support client development
  • Guiding RPA interns in the conduct and completion of general research assignments
  • Coordinating and collaborating with other analysts and senior staff on cross-cutting issues affecting client concerns and needs
  • Being prepared to immerse themselves in new policy issues that may arise
  • Assessing new tools for research and helping to integrate them into the research process
  • Performing other duties as necessary to achieve the goals of the Department

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as (such as political science, history, and public policy). At least one year of professional experience (policy analysis, political science research, legislative or executive agency policymaking, data science, or government affairs consulting) or a law degree is preferred but not required
  • Strong research and analysis skills, ideally in the policy or political arena
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles of both policy and politics, including direct experience with policy dynamics within and among political parties, and the intersection between policy, politics, and communications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the workings of Congress, the Administration, and federal agencies
  • Flexibility and ability to take on and identify emerging issues in policy
  • Familiarity with policy research tools such as Quorum, PoliticoPro, BGOV, CQ, LexisNexis, etc.
  • Experience working with local, state, and/or federal policymakers is plus
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite, including the use of forms, functions, and data visualization tools in Excel

Analyst, Public Affairs

We are currently seeking a bright, focused and proactive individual to join our team as an entry level Analyst in our Public Affairs practice. The Public Affairs team specializes in crafting strong and compelling messages, devising smart communications and advocacy strategies, engaging the right audiences, and influencing public opinion to deliver results for our clients. This position is full-time salaried, with benefits and paid holidays.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conducting research to develop and maintain general knowledge of legislation, public policy, and current events relevant to clients.
  • Drafting content including press releases, one-pagers, case studies, op-eds, website copy, social media, grassroots action alerts and client reports.
  • Assisting in the development of social media campaigns (organic and paid).
  • Maintaining active communication, interface, and coordination with state field teams on specific client projects.
  • Providing support for client events including event planning, vendor outreach, logistics, and event staffing.
  • Supporting new business initiatives through research and proposal development in all formats including PowerPoint, narrative and memo formats.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree. Prior experience (minimum 1 year) including work on political campaigns, in private sector communications, on Capitol Hill, within the executive branch, or for trade associations is helpful.

Additional required professional attributes include:

  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills including attention to grammatical detail, clarity, speed, and accuracy.
  • The ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality.
  • Willingness to be a team player that works well in a collaborative environment and is willing to take initiative when necessary.
  • Familiarity with technological platforms including Microsoft Office Suite and major social media services.
  • The ability to quickly synthesize information from multiple sources, identify salient points, and think creatively about how to communicate their significance.
  • Candidates are also encouraged to note any proficiency with data and media analysis tools or data metric analysis.

Analyst, Insights

FTP offers robust audience insights to help develop and execute campaigns and measure progress toward success. From campaign planning to message development to execution – and every step in between – there are more opportunities for insights and measurement than ever before. We recommend and conduct research only when we are confident that additional insights will be directly actionable and useful. 

Our team uses a full suite of tools and approaches, including qualitative and quantitative opinion research, social and earned media analysis, and advanced campaign analytics to be sure that you target the right audiences with the best message delivered most effectively. If a campaign tactic is working, our insights help improve it — and if it’s not, our findings inform our course corrections. 

We are currently seeking a bright, focused, and proactive individual to join our team as an Analyst in our quickly growing Insights and Analytics practice. The Insights and Analytics team plays a central role in our public affairs strategies and government relations practice, and a successful candidate will be part of one of the fastest growing shops in Washington. This position is full-time salaried, with benefits and paid holidays, based in Washington, D.C. 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Summarizing and outlining findings through presentations, data visualizations, or memos following focus groups, polls, or other data analysis to help clients and colleagues understand and apply research findings. 
  • Managing and coordinating details for focus groups and managing fielding of polls. 
  • Contributing to the development of media analysis, survey design, and focus group facilitation. 
  • Developing and understanding media measurement, opinion measurement, and how it correlates to campaigns and initiatives. 
  • Conducting media tracking by following events and stories close to our clients and colleagues.  
  • Supporting new business initiatives through background research and proposal development. 

Qualifications 

Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree. Prior professional experience (minimum 2 years) including work in survey research, political campaigns, or public affairs is desired. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in both traditional and new methods for gathering and analyzing data including focus groups, polling, and media analysis. Successful applicants must be curious and driven – excited by digging deeper into each new data set and developing a deep understanding of the nuts and bolts of data generation and analysis. 

Additional required professional attributes include: 

  • Baseline understanding of both traditional and new methods for gathering and analyzing data. 
  • The ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and meet deadlines without sacrificing quality. 
  • Eagerness to translate data into clean, actionable findings for clients and colleagues, not a 100-page PowerPoint deck. 
  • Proficiency with data visualization in PowerPoint, Tableau or related software. 
  • Experience with any data analysis platforms (SPSS, Stata, or R) or media analysis platforms (Netbase, Cision, Brandwatch, Quid) is a plus.

The FTP Internship Program offers students and recent graduates substantive, practical, and hands-on experience working at the nexus between the public and private sectors. Interns conduct policy research, track client deliverables, analyze state legislation and regulations, track state political and issue dynamics, write analyses, and assist principals with client-facing projects.
